“Tits On Tits On Ikea” Is First Ever Vine Art To Be Sold!

Angela WashkoThe first ever 6 second Vine video has been sold at the Moving Image Contemporary Video Art Fair in New York this week. It is called “Tits on Tits on Ikea” and was created by Angela Washko. It features a woman sitting on an Ikea couch, holding a laptop at chest height which shows an image of two pink balloons. It was purchased by Dutch collector Myriam Vanneschi.

Twitter’s Vine app allows users to create super short visuals and share them across various different social media networks. It is a relatively new app but Magdalena Sawon, owner and director of Chelsea’s Postmasters Gallery decided that the time had come to push the app into the prime time.

Sawon hired Marina Galperina, art editor for Animal New York and Kyle Chayka, a senior editor at art blog Hyperallergic and together they launched #VeryShortFilmFest which eventually led to #SVAES, The Shortest Video Art Ever Sold.

Sawon said;

“The speed of how this show came about is appropriate to Vine itself, which implies spontaneity… This is the beauty of contemporary art; you’re not sure what’s going to happen. We just did it very quickly.”

At the Moving Image Contemporary Video Art Fair, 22 Vine videos were displayed on a plasma TV on a loop. Underneath the screen there was a collection of USB sticks, ready in waiting to have a purchased video transferred. The going rate for a single vine was $200 and the entire collection was priced at $4,500.

Vanneschi who purchased the first ever Vine at the fair said;

“It represents an alternative model to the gallery system…When art becomes solely a commodity, I find it very uninteresting, but I see buying Internet-based art as very interesting, as an alternative.”

Can you see the sale of Vine videos catching on? Would you pay to own a 6 second short? Leave a comment and let us know.
