Artist Soasig Chamaillard has a penchant for repairing broken statues of the Virgin Mary, however for this French artist, it isn’t so much about restoration as it is transformation.
Chamaillard takes the Madonnas and turns them into iconic figures from popular culture like superheroes or other characters from modern fan fiction.
She says that it is not intended as an insult to the Virgin Mary or those who worship her, but rather to use the Madonna icon as a medium through which to explore contemporary cultural totems. Her statue transformations tend to focus on female characters like Superwoman.
It is a fascinating way of taking one of the oldest, most recognized and worshipped icons in the world and molding it into more modern iconic characters that these days, many people worship too.
Some of her work features the Virgin Mary as Hello Kitty, My Little Pony and even a Jedi Knight!! It is definitely an interesting concept indeed and worth taking a look at. I really want to see if there is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Madonna, because she is one of the strongest female characters of the last few decades I think.
PS She does a much better job at fixing up these statues that the fudged Fresco “crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic” by elderly Spanish lady Cecilia Giménez, don’t ya think?
