Whoopi Goldberg started her tenure today on The View by saying “hi” and then promptly introducing the viewing audience to just how clueless she just might be.

Whoopi

She said, in the discussion on Michael Vick’s federal dogfighting conviction, that dogfighting wasn’t all that unusual “where he comes from,” and that dogfighting in the South was like cockfighting in Puerto Rico — one of those things that is
“indicative to certain parts of the country.”

That’s nice, Whoopi, a nice sweeping generalization to start off the season.  Let me address this by saying that I am from the South and have never heard of, much less seen, a dogfight.  To most cultured Southerners, dogfighting is a thing of exaggerated mythos, much like marrying one’s cousin (though Guiliani has proven that Northerners are just as capable in that respect!).  It is NOT indicative of our region, and I really cannot understand why someone who is as supposedly educated in the ways of cultural tolerance as Whoopi would want to align herself with an ignorant jackass who tortures animals for sport.

Ignorance of the law is not a defense in a court of the United States.  It is simply a reason to point and laugh.

I sincerely hope that Whoopi recants her statements.  I am all for freedom of speech and expression, but I think an indelible line must be drawn when it comes to the defense of a wanton and willful crime that involves the torture and murder of a defenseless animal.  And I am afraid Whoopi crossed that line way too early into her time on The View for the audience to forgive and forget.

You know, I’m not expecting miracles here.  But then, this is the actress who starred in Made in America
