Entertainment Weekly has given us our first good look at Tauriel, an original elven character being introduced in the next segment of Peter Jackson’s saga, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Up until now we’ve really only seen some brief behind-the-scenes glimpses of this new character, played by LOST‘s Evangeline Lilly. This is our first chance of seeing this elf in action.
On the one hand, it’s a bit disheartening when reading the EW article about how Tauriel “will definitely have a love story” in this next film (making her purpose in the film feel rather two dimensional); however, it is still exciting to have her around nonetheless. Tolkien’s original manuscript for The Hobbit lacks any sort of female presence in the entirety of the story, with the exception of the mention of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins at the very end of the story. The fact that Jackson not only brought Cate Blanchett back to reprise her role of Galadriel, but created a whole new female character as well, is incredibly admirable. Let’s just hope Tauriel’s character-arch in The Hobbit follows suit of Princess Leia’s in parts V and VI of Star Wars, and less of Leia in part IV.
