We are all a little bit different when it comes to our culinary likes and dislikes, many of the things that some of us just love to eat would have others running off to the restroom to throw their guts up, but this video clip has brought to my attention something I never knew was a favored snack – rocks.
Nope, I’m not kidding, the woman in this video clip actually tucks into a little container of snacks sized rocks and crunches away on them. Sometimes she’ll pick them straight up off the ground and munch on them where she stands, enjoying their ‘earthy flavor’. If you’ve got sensitive teeth then you might want to mute the video, as the sound of her crunching through those chunks of rock, had me wincing and holding my jaw just thinking about it. She must have some seriously strong incisors to get through that lot, either that or she’s got great dental insurance!
Teresa Widener, 45, tells all about her strange eating habits in the documentary ‘20/20’. Her condition apparently is quite common and is called pica, which comes from the Latin word for magpie – a bird that will literally eat absolutely anything.
According to therapist Dr Jordana Mansbacher, who specializes in eating disorders, Teresa’s condition is quite common and can often occur in pregnant women who crave iron. Teresa explains that she has been eating rocks for more nearly two decades and they have become like an ‘emotional crutch’ to her.
Whilst Mansbacher is keen to demonstrate that the pica condition should not be stigmatized – he also warned off the dangers of eating rocks – which he claims can harm internal organs and cause bleeding as well as introducing potentially harmful parasites into the gut.
