For many women, the invention of the tampon was really liberating and improved their experience at that particular ‘time of the month’. However, according to a very interesting article on the ArtOfManliness.com, apparently the tampon has a number of different uses and not just for the females of the species. I can already imagine the cringes sprawled across the faces of any men reading this already, but relax – and like the author of the article said, “try to forget everything you know about tampons”, I promise this article won’t gross you out, unless of course you find the being lost in the wilderness and having to use your ingenuity to survive sickening!

The author of the piece entitled “Yes, That’s a Tampon in My Mouth: The Swiss Army Survival Tampon — 10 Survival Uses” refers to himself simply as ‘Creek’. In order to help his manly readers get rid of any tampon-based preconceptions, he requests that they imagine that it is a new survival product that has just appeared on the market – the T.A.M.P.O.N – ‘Tactical Adventure Medical Preparedness Outdoors Necessity! There, doesn’t it feel much more masculine already?

He then gives his readers a brief summary of the history of the tampon, which as it turns out seemed to begin in the early 19th century as a dressing used to plug bullet holes in battle. I suppose I can see how that would work. Creek even suggests that tampons have been used during wars in more modern times too and said that he has heard that Army Medics often carry them around in their kits. Apparently sports coaches also used them to plug nosebleeds as well, who would have thought (sorry I’m just chuckling to myself over the image that just popped into my head of a bunch of burly NFL players stomping around the training ground with tampons up their noses)!!
