There’s a lot of places where Sacha Baron Cohen’s multitude of characters go down a treat, whether it’s the bolshy Borat, rude boy Ali G, or camp as Christmas Bruno, he always manages to get his audience laughing out loud. However, I don’t think I could have ever imaged a Cohen creation on morning television, but fair play to the Australian morning television producers who took a massive gamble and had Cohen appear on the show in the guise of Admiral General Aladeen, the protagonist of Cohen’s latest movie, The Dictator.
Aladeen (I hope he isn’t going to shoot me for not addressing him as General) marched onto the show in his decorated, crisp white suit, flanked by two gorgeous female security officers in military getup. Cohen did not tone down any of his highly controversial brand of humor because he was appearing on daytime television and even asked the hosts if they were regretting the decision to have him on the show! At times they did look especially uncomfortable with some of the lines Aladeen came out with, almost as if they could imagine the hotlines buzzing with viewer complaints.
Aladeen, from the fictional Republic of Wadiya claimed to have recently hired Mel Gibson as the nations ‘head of race relations’, he advised the presenters that he believed the Australian Prime Minister would be much more popular if he had a sex change and told them about several famous films from his country, like the classic ‘When Harry Kidnapped Sally’.
I honestly believe that the interview with Admiral General Aladeen was unlike any those particular hosts had ever carried out before and probably made a few people choke on their Weetabix!
The Dictator, which also stars Ben Kingsley, Megan Fox and Anna Farris, comes out this month. Apparently, if you don’t go and see it, General Aladeen cannot guarantee your family’s safety!
