Mind Reading Robot That Can Predict Our Next Moves!

Researchers at Cornell University have developed a robot that they say can predict a human’s move in order to provide assistance.

The mind-reading robot, called the PR2, is a personal robot designed by Willow Garage. It utilizes a Microsoft Kinect 3D camera to register body movements and algorithms to predict what we are going to do next. At the moment, the robot’s database is centered on household activities, so it can tell if you are going to reach for a drink or open the fridge door! Continue Reading

Students Construct Robotic Opener For Schoolmate With Muscular Dystrophy

Pinckney Community High School junior Nick Torrance operates an automated locker door opener.


Two Pinckney Community High School seniors, Micah Stuhldreher and Wyatt Smrcka, have created a robotic locker opener for school mate Nick Torrance who suffers from muscular dystrophy and would have otherwise been unable to open his locker unassisted.

All Torrance needs to do to get his locker to open is move his hand over a sensor, with another move of his hand, the locker automatically closes again and it gives him a greater feeling of independence. Continue Reading

Check out this totally creepy rubber robosnake created by Cagdas Onal and his colleagues at MIT. Their robosnake is one of the first examples of a soft-bodied robot that is able to slither around powered by air.

The “muscles” in the robosnake are tiny tubes made from soft polymers called elastomers that line the snake’s segments. To imitate the way a real life snake moves, an onboard computer in robosnake’s tail controls a compressor that changes the air pressure in the elastomer tubing. The air that passes through the body creates a wave that increases in amplitude with higher pressure and the valves in the joints move for it to undulate like a real slithering reptile. Introducing BlabDroids – The Adorable Robots That Can Shoot & Direct Documentaries!!

These adorable little robots are called BlabDroids and they were created by artist and roboticist Alex Reben for his MIT master’s thesis. They are voiced by a 7-year old boy known as Rowan and are set up to rove around finding people to interview. The interviewee simply pushes a button once they have answered a question and then the BlabDroid asks them another!

Working with filmmaker Brent Hoff, Reben let loose his flock of BlabDroids at Tribeca’s Film Festival this week as part of the festival’s transmedia Storyscapes program. 20 of Reben’s BlabDroids will travel around the festival on their motorized wheels, seeking out their subjects with heat sensors and then ask them some very personal questions! Back in 2006, Nigel Ackland lost his arm in a terrible work accident that saw his limb caught in an industrial blending machine. He was given the prosthetic limb the Bebionic3, which many have called the world’s most advanced bionic hand, a little while back and he regularly updates his many YouTube followers on his incredible progress. The incredibly advanced prosthetic has been dubbed the “Terminator Arm” – though it’s not quite as lethal as one of Arnie’s, it is still pretty damn impressive!

The Bebionic3 has a lifelike appearance and grip patterns. It can be wirelessly programmed and tailored to suit the individual needs of the wearer. The arm is programmed to read and interpret brain signals sent by the wearer, signals that are much like those that would be used to command movement from a human arm. Continue Reading
