Simpsons Creator Matt Groening Reveals Springfield’s Namesake

Springfield, Anytown USA

It’s been 25 years since The Simpsons first made their debut on television, and it still remains one of the most popular and relevant shows on the airwaves today.

One of the ongoing jokes and mysteries within the series is the location of Springfield, with several episodes giving implausible and geographically impossible (often contradictory) hints as to it’s location. For example, in The Simpsons Movie it’s shown that four states – Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky – share borders with Springfield, adding to the running gag.

And although in the animated world of The Simpsons the answer isn’t relevant, as it’s understood by viewers to be a fictitious city in an impossible state, representing anywhere in America, fans are still curious as to where the real life Springfield might be, as there are many towns with such a name throughout the United States.

Well, the mystery is now solved.

According to creator Matt Groening in an interview with Smithsonian Magazine, The Simpsons‘ Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon.

Groening said:

Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.
