New eBay Auction For Usain Bolt’s Olympic Camera

ebay usain bolt new New eBay Auction For Usain Bolt’s Olympic Camera

Last week we wrote an article about the eBay auction of the Nikon D4 that Usain Bolt famously used to snap the paps after winning a gold medal in the 200m at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

Well it was all going swimmingly, bidding for the camera had gone up to $11,600 – with the proceeds of the sale set to go to educational and cancer research charities. Bolt had carved his name into the camera after taking the pics that were beamed across the globe, making the product entirely unique!

Then the item simply vanished. Scandinavian photojournalist Jimmy Wixtrom whom Bolt took the camera off at the Olympics had set up the auction and was informed by eBay that the item had been removed because it violated eBay’s charity auction policies. Apparently eBay don’t much like when you auction stuff on their site for any charities other than the ones they endorse.Continue Reading

The Sci-Fi Techniques That Olympic Athletes Are Trying To Improve Performance

The Sci Fi Techniques That Olympic Athletes Are Trying To Improve Performance

For competitive athletes just improving performance by a second can mean the difference between Gold and Silver at a coveted event like the Olympic Games. These days, advancements in modern technology have seen our professionals resort to some very strange training techniques indeed, techniques that seem more like they belong in a science fiction movie than in a gym.

One such method that is said to improve performance is a cryotherapy chamber. Don’t be misled by the name, it is not a place where athletes go to talk about their feelings and cry-it-out in the faint hope that being emotionally balanced will give them that all important edge in a competition, but rather a freezing cold chamber that is -220 Fahrenheit. tim berners lee ccastig NBC Olympics Commentary Derp: Anchors Admit To Not Knowing Tim Berners Lee

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I thought that television anchors were supposed to seem informed and know a little bit about the subject they are discussing whilst on the air?

Well it seems like NBC anchors Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer didn’t get this memo, whilst commentating on the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony they admit openly to not knowing who Tim Berners-Lee is!Continue Reading

So Much For Free Enterprise – McDonald’s Stop Other Vendors Selling Chips At London 2012

Olympic Chips So Much For Free Enterprise – McDonald’s Stop Other Vendors Selling Chips At London 2012

According to the information printed on this poster which has allegedly already gone up around London 2012 Olympic sites, food vendors are not allowed to serve chips (unless served with fish) because of “sponsorship obligations with McDonald’s.”

In an exclusive deal with the International Olympic Committee, McDonald’s have the sole right to sell chips at the Games, so unless other vendors are serving up the traditional British cuisine of Fish & Chips, they aren’t allowed to serve the popular potato side!

If this poster is to be believed it seems like McDonald’s doesn’t want anyone sneaking in on their chip trade at the Games, which kinda debunks the capitalist belief in free enterprise!
Alongside the British taxpayer input, McDonald’s, Coca Cola and Cadbury’s are the main sponsors of London 2012 Olympics. Got to love that its junk food, soda and candy companies that are sponsoring what is one of the world’s most high profile and prestigious sporting events. Ironic much?

Considering that the budget for London 2012 is an astonishing £24 billion and the majority of that is public money, it is a little bit cheeky that McDonald’s have imposed this kind of restrictive regulation on other food vendors at the Games, but no one should really be especially surprised though! It is simply the typical behavior of a big chain throwing their weight around and trying to squeeze out the small fry!

Countdown To London 2012 – Resurrecting Exciting Olympic Sports That Got The Axe

Olympics events Countdown To London 2012 – Resurrecting Exciting Olympic Sports That Got The Axe

New York Times sports writer Victor Mather wrote an interesting blog article a few days ago, putting forward what he believed were the 10 most exciting former Olympic sports that could be brought back to feature at London 2012. Sourcing his article from The Complete Book of the Olympics and Sports Reference’s Olympics section he cites a number of events that could be very interesting indeed if they were resurrected!

Of the events he mentioned, one that I found particularly attention-grabbing was the 12-hour bicycle race, which sadly only featured in the 1896 Olympics. Competitors would ride their bikes from 7am to 7pm in a grueling test of stamina and determination. Apparently only two competitors actually managed to finish the race, and the winner, Austria’s Adolf Schmal clocked up an astonishing 180 miles!

Another good one was the 200-meter swimming obstacle race that featured in the 1900 Games. Throwing some obstacles into the water, making the swimmers clamber over, or duck under them would certainly make this swim race a little bit thrilling than some of the others. Continue Reading

‘Living Archive Of People’s Stories and Lives’ – Boat Project About To Launch

It has often been said that a vessel which has been sailing the high seas could tell a thousand stories; tales of adventures and expeditions , battles against crashing waves and sea creatures or the beauty of sitting atop a tranquil ocean as the sun sets against the horizon.

Well Lone Twin’s Boat Project is one with a difference, it can tell you thousands of stories and yet it has not even taken its maiden voyage yet. The 30ft state of the art yacht was made almost entirely from wooden items that people from the South East donated along with the items story. From exotic woods to the more commonplace, from piano to picture frame, every single donated item had a tale twisted into the grain.

The Boat Project collected these items from February to August of 2011 and has since been using them to create this ‘living archive of people’s stories and lives’. The yacht will be launched on Monday 7th May 2012.

Captain Mike Barham and his crew will then leave Chichester Harbour taking the yacht on her maiden voyage throughout the region of South East England. After the yacht returns from its Maiden Voyage, hopefully having collected a few more stories from its journey, it will be given back to the region as a resource for the general public.

The Boat Project is part of ‘Artists Taking the Lead’ – which is a series of 12 public art commissions throughout the UK as a way to commemorate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The boat project won the commission for the South East and was funded by Arts Council England.

It will also be a part of the London 2012 Festival, a 12-week festival starting on June 21st which aims to bring the work of leading artists from around the world together with the most highly regarded from the UK.

Unfortunately tickets for the launch are sold out, but the Boat Project organizers will be documenting the day. You can also follow events as they unfold on Facebook or Twitter.
