The city of London has been on a bit of Graffiti crackdown in a bid to ‘clean up’ the city for the London 2012 Games that are taking place there this summer, street artists have been banned from Olympic venues and several of those who dared contravene this rule were arrested last week.

But now the work of one of the world’s most celebrated street artists is under threat, the infamous Banksy. The infamous artist has already made it clear that he will not be discouraged from producing ‘Olympic inspired’ work and has already put two pieces up on his website.

One is an image of an athlete throwing a missile instead of a javelin and the other is of a pole vaulter jumping over a derelict waste-land. The pictures display Banksy’s typical satirical style and highlight the inequality in society. Continue Reading

‘Brand Police’ Out In Force To Protect Olympic Sponsors

Hundreds of uniformed Olympic officers will be taking to Britain’s streets today to protect Olympic sponsor’s lucrative marketing deals. They will be parading around the country wearing purple caps and tops, checking that firms are not engaging in “ambush marketing” or “illegally associating themselves with the Games at the expense of official sponsors such as Adidas, McDonald’s, Coca Cola and BP.”

This move is likely draw more flack for the organizers over the fact that the government has had to draft in 3,500 soldiers who were on leave to make up the shortfall in security staff after security firm G4S confessed that they would be unable to supply the Games with the numbers of security staff they had previously promised. It will add fuel to the fire in the debate that the Olympics are becoming too corporate. According to several media outlets, the policing of sponsorship deals and the crackdown on “ambush marketing” is stricter and more thorough than it has been at any other Olympics in history. Chips Olympic Workers Freed From McDonald’s Chip Embargo

Yesterday we wrote about the news that McDonald’s, who are one of the main sponsors of the London 2012 Olympic Games, had exclusive rights to sell chips inside the grounds of the games. Because of McDonald’s sponsorship agreement with London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) other food vendors inside the ground would only be allowed to serve chips with fish, but not with any other meal or just as a side.

However, it seems that Olympic employees working on the opening and closing ceremonies will be allowed to consume the popular potato side dish!!

In what the Guardian called the “great London 2012 Olympic chip embargo” LOCOG finally cracked after receiving a multitude of complaints from staff craving chips! They claim to have discussed the issue with McDonald’s and come to some sort of agreement. Continue Reading

The legendary torch which will ignite the cauldron that marks the beginning of the London 2012 Olympic Games, has been lit during a ceremony in Olympia, Greece.

The symbolic torch was lit by actress Ino Menegaki, who was dressed as a high priestess and kindled the flame by using a mirror to capture the sun’s rays. The ceremony took place at the Temple of Hera ruins, which is nearby the ancient Olympic stadium which hosted the first ever set of games.

The flame, which is symbolic of purity because it comes directly from the sun, was then transferred to the London 2012 torch. Liverpool-born, Greek world champion 10km swimmer Sypros Gianniotis was holding the torch at the time, after it was ignited he began to run with it, starting the emblematic flame off on its week long journey around Greece.

He then passed it on to the first British torchbearer, 19-year old boxer, Alex Loukos, who was actually part of the delegation of schoolchildren who made the trip to Singapore in London’s final bid to host the Games. Continue Reading
