According to the information printed on this poster which has allegedly already gone up around London 2012 Olympic sites, food vendors are not allowed to serve chips (unless served with fish) because of “sponsorship obligations with McDonald’s.”
In an exclusive deal with the International Olympic Committee, McDonald’s have the sole right to sell chips at the Games, so unless other vendors are serving up the traditional British cuisine of Fish & Chips, they aren’t allowed to serve the popular potato side!
If this poster is to be believed it seems like McDonald’s doesn’t want anyone sneaking in on their chip trade at the Games, which kinda debunks the capitalist belief in free enterprise!
Alongside the British taxpayer input, McDonald’s, Coca Cola and Cadbury’s are the main sponsors of London 2012 Olympics. Got to love that its junk food, soda and candy companies that are sponsoring what is one of the world’s most high profile and prestigious sporting events. Ironic much?
Considering that the budget for London 2012 is an astonishing £24 billion and the majority of that is public money, it is a little bit cheeky that McDonald’s have imposed this kind of restrictive regulation on other food vendors at the Games, but no one should really be especially surprised though! It is simply the typical behavior of a big chain throwing their weight around and trying to squeeze out the small fry!
