Disney Release Acclaimed Paperman Short Online

paperman Disney Release Acclaimed Paperman Short Online

Normally it’s Disney’s feature length productions that get all the attention, but just recently a 6.30 minute short they created called Paperman has been getting the rave reviews!

Paperman was directed by John Kahrs and uses an innovative blend of hand-drawn and computer generated imagery. It has a really distinct 1940s feel to it and the lack of dialogue and the hybrid style has got the short a little bit of a cult following.

Initially it was released in the theatres showing just before Wreck-It Ralph, but after Wreck-It Ralph completed its cinema run, there was no way to see it. Until now that is, because Disney has kindly put it online so everyone has a chance to see it! Paperman has even been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category and we can see why, because it is a really uplifting, enjoyable little story that really makes you want to start throwing paper airplanes!! It’s almost too darn cute for words. Here, see for yourself…Continue Reading

Disney Create Awesome 8-Bit Lane in London To Advertise Wreck-It Ralph Release

8 bit Lane Disney Create Awesome 8 Bit Lane in London To Advertise Wreck It Ralph Release

To promote the release of the animated Disney feature Wreck-It Ralph which opens in UK movie theaters on 8th February 2013, Disney commissioned the construction of 8-bit Lane in London!

Wreck-It Ralph tells the story of a video game villain who dreams of being a hero and undertakes a quest to try and fulfill this dream, however, in the process he ends up wrecking a whole new type of havoc to the arcade that is his home!

People passing through the 8-bit lane get a wonderfully pixilated walk; a pair of 8-bit pigeons perch on a pipe, a decidedly square dog waits patiently for his owner, even the clouds in the sky look like they’ve been lifted from an old school computer game.

The pixel art and sculpture used for London’s 8-bit Lane were created by Disney’s film production sculptor Aden Hynes. Continue Reading

Disney World Debut Fabulous Mechanical Flying Dragon

disney fantasyland dragon 10 Disney World Debut Fabulous Mechanical Flying Dragon

Disney World celebrated the opening of “New Fantasyland” an expansion of the Magic Kingdom theme park, with a fabulous mechanical flying, fire-breathing dragon.
“New Fantasyland” features several attractions inspired by popular classics like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. The entire place is constructed to have the feel of a storybook that has been magically brought to life.
At a recent media event to celebrate the opening of “New Fantasyland”, guests were treated to the awe-inspiring sight of this huge beast circling the skies above their heads. Dazzled onlookers watched in wonder as the mechanical creature looped around, shot fireworks out of its mouth and roared.
There has been some speculation that Disney was planning to introduce a flying dragon as a theme park attraction since they filed a patent outlining such a contraption, back in 2010. The news about the patent came out at the same time that an announcement was made for an Avatar themed section of the park (that is scheduled for completion in 2016), so many people assumed that the two were somehow related. Another Awesome Lance Ford Mashup: Fight Club Meets Wreck-It-Ralph!

Movie fanatic Lance Ford, who brought us the fandom Goonies/The Hobbit mashup has created another fantastic film merger with this Wreck-It-Ralph meets Fight Club movie trailer.

Ford stated that he immediately noticed certain similarities between the recently released Wreck-It-Ralph and the iconic 1999 movie Fight Club.

Ford said;

“Other than the obvious connection of the main characters internal struggle, both have great group therapy scenes, the demolition of some big buildings, and an off-kilter scene involving cops.”

I haven’t seen Wreck-It-Ralph, but it seems as though it is a little like a Fight Club for the younger generation and this lighthearted mashup gives us an insight into what the cult classic might have been like if it was targeted for a more innocent audience. The Wreck-It-Ralph narration takes all the dark, moody, dystopian elements from the Fight Club footage and creates a totally new, if somewhat obscure vibe! Continue Reading

Disney & The Robot Affection-Stealing Conspiracy!

robocatch Disney & The Robot Affection Stealing Conspiracy!

This video from the Disney research labs in Pittsburgh shows their latest project – the humanoid robot that can play catch with you. This robot is never going to make our baseball players obsolete or anything as it’s throwing and catching skills aren’t all that advanced. However, it can easily partake in a game of catch with you and displays some remarkably humanistic attributes while it does so. A Kinect camera is used to track the trajectory of the object thrown at it, however, the way in which it moves its head gives the distinct appearance that it is tracking it with its eyes – the way you or I would. If it doesn’t make a catch then it carries out a number of different gestures to relay this disappointment – a shake of a head, a shrug of shoulders or a woeful look down at the ground.

Disney says that they are working on this humanoid robot, so that theme park visitors will be better able to interact with their favorite Disney characters. However, Geekosystem’s Mike Epstein has posed the theory that it is actually intended to steal your children’s affection by replicating the age-old pastime between parent and child of playing a game of catch! Disney Wars: Eclectic Method’s Star Wars & Disney Musical Merger!

Since Walt Disney announced that they had finalized the acquisition of Lucasfilm last week, there has been an abundance of Star Wars and Disney mashups and mergers, both official and unofficial.

This little musical piece is from Eclectic Method and is a blend of Star Wars themed music and numerous Disney characters who are now armed with the iconic Lightsaber and have had their voices dubbed with those from the cult Star Wars films.

Eclectic Method said: “Well I couldn’t resist. Watch Disney characters whip out their lightsabers, recount classic Star Wars lines and attempt to persuade Luke that they are his father.”

That’s got me thinking…If Luke’s father was a Disney character, who do you think it would be? Scar from the Lion King perhaps or maybe The Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood? Hmmm, leave a comment and let us know who you think would be best suited to the role!
