Tablet Wars: Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 Advert That Scoffs At iPad’s Price

In what will undoubtedly invoke some sort of backlash from Apple, Amazon has gone for the jugular in their latest advert for the Kindle Fire HD which openly mocks the iPad’s price.

The advert places both items side by side in a split screen as a narrator tells the viewer that they might “not be able to tell the difference” between the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and the iPad, but their wallet will certainly be able to notice the distinction. The prices for both products are then displayed on either screen, with the iPad advertized at $499 and the Kindle, a much more affordable $299.

The chasm between the different prices of the two products is indeed quite sizeable, however many argue that the iPad is, overall a much better device and worth paying that little bit extra for. For people who have to balance their budgets however – the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 does look like an impressive product and may well end up stealing some of tablet market away from Apple.

kindle lending library European Launch Of Amazon Kindle Owners’ Lending Library To Take Place In October

Amazon has confirmed that European Kindle owners will now be able to borrow books from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library once it is launched later in October.

The US version was launched in November of 2011 and allows Amazon Prime subscribers access to a wide range of books available to borrow on their Kindle devices. Subscribers can borrow up 1 book a month but there is no limit on how long this book can be kept on the device. Becoming a prime subscriber in the UK costs £49 each year and you will obviously need a Kindle device, the cost is similar in France and Germany.

Amazon claims that the library has more than 200,000 titles for subscribers to choose from. They come in a wide range with things like local-language ebooks as well as bestsellers like the Harry Potter series.

Publishers and authors will be pleased to hear that the Kindle Direct Publishing Platform will support Kindle Owners’ Lending Library inclusion too. The KDP Select fund – which pays out royalties to the authors for each book borrowed, has been injected with funds to support the predicted increase in demand. In October the fund was dramatically increased from $100,000 to a whopping $700,000 and Amazon say another increase is on the cards for November.

What Would Happen If Amazon Could Ship Your Product To You Yesterday

The news that Amazon are in the process of launching a same-day shipping option, (which would be the first for an online retailer) inspired Ben Stadler and The Bilderbergers to put together this comedy sketch musing over what would happen if Amazon launched ‘Yesterday Shipping’.

The sketch shows how bizarre life and shopping would be if somehow these giants of online retail figured out how to traverse the laws of time and space and get the product that you wanted a day before you actually decided you wanted it and put the order in. Trippy stuff indeed…
