Sign The Petition – Stop British Student Richard O’Dwyer From Being Extradited To U.S

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is the latest to throw his support behind the calls to stop 24-year-old Sheffield Hallam University student Richard O’Dwyer from being extradited to the U.S to face charges of copyright infringement and a possible 10-year jail term.

Wales has started a petition via to get UK Home Secretary Theresa May to revoke the decision to send O’Dwyer to the U.S to face these jumped up charges. His petition, which has been going just a little over a week, has already received more than 200,000 signatures.

O’Dwyer created a website called which, in a similar way to a search engine, linked places for people to watch movies and television online.

O’Dwyer is a British citizen, he has lived in the UK his entire life and the majority of his sites users did not originate from the U.S, their extradition attempt for copyright infringement are absurd and over-reaching.

Wales claims that the case against O’Dwyer is very thin, stating that O’Dwyer did his best to “play by the rules.” On the occasions where he was asked to remove content by copyright holders he did so and his sight hosted links – not copyrighted content, which if there, was submitted by the users.

Wales said that despite the fact that “copyright is an important institution…It does not mean that we should abandon time-honored moral and legal principles to allow endless encroachments on our civil liberties in the interests of the moguls of Hollywood.

“Richard O’Dwyer is the human face of the battle between the content industry and the interests of the general public. Earlier this year, in the fight against the anti-copyright bills SOPA and PIPA, the public won its first big victory. This could be our second.”

O’Dwyer is currently awaiting a date for his appeal against the extradition treaty to be heard.

I can’t for the life of me fathom why the U.S are so hellbent on extraditing this 20-something computer geek, I mean it’s not like he hacked into the FBI database and splattered their most intimate details all over the net, in the grand scheme of things, he is a relatively small fish and the charges brought against him by UK prosecutors were dropped.

Sign the petition, let’s do what we can to stop O’Dwyer being extradited!!
