Normally sci-fi conventions are quite peaceful affairs with people from numerous different fandoms happily co-existing with one another.

However that is not always the case and sometimes shit can get serious between rival fans! At a sci-fi convention in Norwich, UK, police had to intervene after a brawl was about to break out between Star Wars fans and Doctor Who fans from rival clubs!

More than a dozen fans, including many in cosplay, had to be separated after police were called to the scene and someone reported seeing an assault.

The feud is the latest in a long-running and bitter rivalry between the Norwich Sci Fi Club and Norwich Star Wars Club.

Apparently the ugly scenes occurred after the treasurer of the Norwich Sci Fi Club, Jim Poole, turned up at the event, which was hosted by the Norwich Star Wars Club at the University of East Anglia.

Poole was asked to leave the premises as he approached Doctor Who actor Graham Cole for an autograph and this led to the stand-off between the clubs that had to be sorted out by police and campus security.

Norwich police said that they had been called to the scene because of reports that a man had been assaulted, however upon their arrival they found the altercation about to occur between the two rival clubs.

A Police spokesman said: “After lengthy investigation, talking to witnesses and reviewing good CCTV footage, it was confirmed that there was no assault. The two rival groups were spoken to and advised to keep out of each other’s way.”

Convention organizer Richard Walker, 63, said that the Norwich Sci Fi club had made attempts to undermine the event by posting negative and derogatory comments on Facebook. However Mr. Poole claims that he went to the convention “in good faith” to get autographs from 2 actors that were attending the event and that his club had planned to auction them off to raise money for charity.

More than 1,000 people were said to have attended the event, which was back after a 3-year absence and Mr. Walker said that the dispute between the rival clubs didn’t mar the convention which he said had been “really good.”

The mischievous side of me really wishes there was a bit of video footage of the row, as I’m intrigued as to which set of fans are the most badass!
