Sesame Street’s been in the news a great deal lately. For starters, we’ve heard an endless amount on Governor Mitt Romney’s outlook on not just PBS, but Sesame as well. The Governor was quoted in the first presidential debate saying, “I like PBS, I love Big Bird, I actually like you too[, Jim Lehrer], but I’m going to stop borrowing money from China to pay for things we don’t need.” Since then, there’s been a stir on the Internet. People have taken up arms to defend Big Bird and friends, blogs erupting with thoughts on the matter and people organizing a Puppet March in support of PBS. Big Bird himself even made a special guest appearance on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago, showing just how awesomely Sesame Workshop can handle a situation such as this one.
With this sudden popularity for everyone’s favorite yellow bird this time of year, it’s unsurprising that a ton of people now want to go as Big Bird for Halloween. What is surprising is how many women seem to be interested in dressing up as “Sexy Big Bird.” The web-site Yandy, well known for their sexy Halloween costumes, has been selling the above costume for the last couple weeks now.
Well Sesame Street is not taking that shit lying down.
What most people don’t seem to realize is that Sesame is not responsible for the production of these costumes. Sarah Beth Erb, a representative of Sesame Workshop, said in an interview with Buzzfeed that their legal team “has sent a cease and desist letter to the website selling them, will monitor the site, and follow up accordingly to make sure the items in question are removed.” It turns out, while Yandy was selling the official Big Bird headband through their proper manufacturer, they have this “sexy” costume constructed without proper rights from Sesame Street, listing it for purchase right next to the headband in hopes of getting people to purchase both.
While it would appear the people at Yandy have gotten the message, seeing as now when you do a search for “Big Bird” the only items you can find is the more suitable, and Sesame approved, cutesy Big Bird costume.

This is unfortunately not the case. Their Sexy Big Bird costume is currently being listed as Exclusive Yellow Dress and Stockings, and is also on sale right now. Wow. What a shocker.
This isn’t even the only sexy Sesame Street costumes they have. They’re also selling: Faux Denim Overalls Set (Ernie), Sexy Trash Monster Costume (Oscar), Faux Fur and Mesh Blue Dress Set (Cookie Monster), Furry Red Romper (Elmo), and Sexy Green Overall Set (Bert). None of these costumes are listed under their proper Sesame Street character names, because Yandy has created them without the right to do so. Like the unofficial Big Bird costume, when you look at one of these “sexy” costumes you’ll find the official Sesame mask on your recommendations sidebar. You’ll also notice how these costumes are currently on sale as well, probably because Yandy knows they’re in a whole heap of trouble.
Considering all of this, it’s unclear to me who thinks “Hey, you know what would be sexy to dress up for as Halloween? Elmo.”

Especially when there’s a far cuter, and Sesame approved, costume to be bought.

I guess for now we can only hope that Yandy will cease these costume sales and respect Sesame Street’s wishes.
… but seriously, who out there really wants to go as a sexy Bert?
