On September 19th the second trailer for this December’s upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released.
This Hobbit trailer contains never before seen footage from Peter Jackson’s first film in his upcoming trilogy. Most of us grew up with The Hobbit and know all its twists-and-turns, so it’s wonderful to see the beloved story come to life on screen. The Hobbit trailer gives us a better look at the dwarfs as characters, as well as the relationship shared between Bilbo and Gandalf. We’re also given a much better glimpse of the three trolls. Both Elrond and Galadriel make brief appearances, and we get our first real look at Gollum (who looks exactly the same, but still, it’s great to see him back again). The cinematography is just as gorgeous as any of the previous Lord of the Rings films, and it certainly looks like Jackson has taken us ten years into the past when his first Middle Earth trilogy was being released to theaters.
Gandalf speaks a familiar quote at the trailer’s end: “Home is now behind you, the world is ahead.” Diehard Lord of the Rings fans will recognize these as the words sung by Pippin to Denethor in Return of the King. As we wait patiently for December’s arrival, we can all reflect on what these words will soon mean to each and every one of us. We all get to embark on this extraordinary journey with another hobbit in foreign lands once more, making it feel as if we’ve left home to travel the world of Middle Earth yet again.
Just three more months to go.
