At a high-profile and lavish “Samsung Unpacked” event that took place at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC, electronic giants Samsung launched their eagerly awaited, new Android smartphone, the Galaxy S4!
According to several reports, the S4 is a lot like the S3 and Note II aesthetically, though Samsung have squared off the corners and increased the screen size to 5-inchs that sports an impressive 441ppi Super AMOLED display. It is 7.9mm thick, (so thinner than the S3) and weighs just 130g.
The S4 runs using Android 4.2.2 with TouchWiz and offers 2GB of RAM and a 2,600 mAh battery. The smartphone comes with 16GB of on board storage with 32GB and 64GB storage options and a microSD card slot should you need more. It also has LTE and Bluetooth 4.0 as well as an IR blaster for remote control, NFC, a pedometer and a temperature and humidity sensor. Fitness freaks can also slip the accompanying S band on, for times that they are walking around without the device in their pocket and can enter their daily food intake too!
The device sports an impressive 13-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. It also comes with a Dual Camera feature that lets users insert themselves into camera shots using the front-facing camera. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ve also got the Sound and Shot feature that allows users to record 5-seconds of audio before taking a pic and Drama Shot that allows for multiple pics to be taken and merged into a multi-frame collage. There is also the Cinema Photo option, which lets you choose one part of a picture to move, while the rest stays still – basically allowing you to turn your world into a series of GIFs!! With Eraser, users have the ability to omit unwanted passersby from their pictures – so it seems photobombers have had their day!!
For the globetrotting types, the S Translator software will be of great interest. This feature has 10 languages and can translate speech-to-text and vice versa. It allows users to take pictures of things like menus and signs and can translate them without an internet connection – a great tool for travelers who don’t want to end up ordering sautéed insects or animal testicles for lunch!!
The Air View option lets users see previews and swipe through pics by hovering over the screen with a finger and is similar to the Note II’s Pen feature. Apparently it also works when the user is wearing gloves – useful for folk that live in countries that are cold all year round I guess!
The Air Gesture lets users navigate the phone and answer calls by swiping their hand, not needing an actual touch, which I guess bakers, chefs and people who work in other professions that mean their fingers are icky all the time, will undoubtedly appreciate!
With Smart Stay, Samsung reps say that the phone will detect whether you are looking at the screen and pause it if your attention is diverted and you have to look away, automatically restarting when your gaze returns. Though this sounds incredibly cool, I can imagine that it could also become a hindrance for those who have to watch a lot of boring shit for work and enjoy staring off into the horizon as a respite, I suppose you can turn it off though if it doesn’t work for you!
With HomeSync users get 1TB of cloud storage and can connect the device to computers, phones and tablets.
Similar to Apple’s PA Siri, the S4 has the new S Voice feature which can read messages and gives users the option to act on them.
In a bid to make it as simple as possible for users to carry their info over to the S4, there is Smart Switch which lets users put data onto a PC or laptop before carrying it onto the device.
The Verge has a hand on video:
The S4 has a whole host of other features include Google Play, and the Knox software which lets users separate the phone into a work device and a personal one, eliminating the need for multiple devices.
Samsung didn’t however reveal the price of this nifty new device, not carrier information, but they did say it would have a “premium Samsung Smartphone price.”
It will be available to purchase in “Black Mist” or “White Frost” (so black or white then) in 155 countries from April 2013.
