Wynkoop Brewing Company has announced that on October 8th at 5pm, they will be tapping the first keg of a new and exclusive Wynkoop beer made using bull testicles.
The company claims that the Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is the ballsiest beer ever and though it sounds like a joke, they assure us that this beer is actually made using the rather unusual (and disgusting) ingredient of bull testicles. A Rocky Mountain Oyster is a colloquial name for bull testicles in case you didn’t know.
In actual fact, the whole thing did actually start out as a joke (some would say it should have stayed that way) after Wynkoop released a spoof April Fool’s Day video in which they claimed to have created a ballsy beer made from bull testicles – which apparently are a pretty popular delicacy around there!
Whilst some people realized immediately that the video was parody sketch, others thought the company were actually being serious. So after receiving several requests from brewers and beer writers who all wanted to try a little sample of this unique beer made from bulls bollocks the company decided to go ahead and make it for real. Wynkoop head brewer Andy Brown said: “We’ve been making ballsy beer for the past few years…and this is great proof of that.”
An 8-barrel batch includes 25 pounds of bull testicles as well as Colorado-grown base malts, 7 specialty malts, Styrian Goldings hops and a little twist of sea salt, which the company claims gives it that extra layer of Rocky Mountain oyster flavors. The beer is 7% ABV and has 3 BPBs – that stands for balls per barrel of course!
The beer will be available exclusively at Wynkoop Brewing Company and they said that they really “hope you go nuts for it.” Obvious pun intended.
You can also have a taste of this ballsy beer at the Wynkoop table at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, which runs between October 11th and 13th at the Colorado Convention Center.
Call me old fashioned, but I much prefer my alcohol not made from weird shit and I must admit I am finding this trend of using wacky ingredients in our beverages more than a little disturbing. I’m not sure which brew I would like to try less, the bull testicle beer or the stuff made using the yeast obtained from a brewmaster’s beard!!
