Do you remember the story about the Cecilia Giménez, the old Spanish lady who tried to restore a 19th century fresco of Jesus and fudged it completely? Well just in case you don’t, it goes a little something like this.
The 80-something-year old, Giménez tried to restore the painting for the Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja and totally ballsed it up. One BBC correspondent said it now resembled “a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic” which I personally think is a totally epic and rather fitting description of what the ‘Ecce Homo’ looked like after she was done with it.
Giménez was reportedly devastated by the response to her picture and allegedly even had a panic attack. But before long, the internet came to the rescue and her “hairy monkey” became a popular meme.
Some fans have even travelled to the church to see the picture and the church made a little bit of money from the tourism and the attention that it brought. Now Giménez is no longer devastated and she wants a piece of the action. She has lawyered-up and hollering about copyright! She is demanding approximately 2,000 euros ($2,600) which she believes is a fair cut of the money that the church has made from her ‘masterpiece.’
It says a lot that an 80-year-old lady who committed a selfless act for her church, has turned the tables and is now banging on about copyright, it’s simply crazy.
