The news that NASA’s rover, the Curiosity touched down safely on Mars on Monday was rapturously received around the world. The complex landing, which involved a sky crane lowering the 2.6billion Curiosity onto the Red Planet was hailed a complete success and the first few pictures its intricate cameras took of Mars were beamed to earth and subsequently bounced about the internet.
Without meaning to sound like I am knocking the achievement of such a fantastic mission, the pictures were a little boring to anyone who isn’t a scientist or a space travel fanatic. So of course, some internet users took matters into their own hands and quickly created a ‘Mars Curiosity’ pics Meme.
With a little help from photoshop, these internet pranksters created some pretty awesome pics that depict what life on Mars could be like. Taking their inspiration from movies, popular culture and cartoons, the pictures posted on the image sharing website Imgure became instantly popular and were shared on various other social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
One picture shows the popular Warner Bros character Marvin the Martian, looking decidedly unimpressed as he greets the Curiosity. This was my personal favorite, because when I first saw the image beamed down by the Curiosity, I actually imagined him being in it, before I’d seen the photoshopped one!
Another brilliant one shows record breaking sprinter Usain Bolt bounding across Mars in the Jamaican colors. I wonder if he could made the Curiosity’s 8 and a half month journey from earth to Mars in a shorter time!
Others feature Ridley Scott’s Aliens appearing to put a spanner in NASA’s works and there is also a cameo appearance from Dr Who, who we all assume has been there before!
