If you thought the game Donkey Kong was old school in itself, then wait till you see this mechanical version of the game which is more archaic than it is arcade!!
It really does look like a scene from the cult game has been whipped out of the console and brought to life in the real world.
Ah it’s brought back loads of fluffy memories of the hours I wasted playing Donkey Kong as a child and the insufferable devastation I felt when it broke!
The game was created by builder Martin Raynsford and as you can probably tell from the video clip, it is still in the development stages. He made it using laser cut wood and a mechanism that fires ball bearings down towards Mario who is currently suspended in the one spot, able to leap over the barrels but not do much else yet!

The ball bearings are magnetic, so if Mario gets his timing wrong, then they knock him clean out, and the game is actually controlled by a NES gamepad, très cool!
Raynsford’s goal is make the game fully-functional in time for exhibition at next year’s UK Maker Faire and we are looking forward to seeing the finished product too!
