The Fun Theory is a Volkswagen initiative intended to get the general public involved in a series of fun projects. Recently they have been trying to get people to choose the stairs over the escalator by luring them with piano keys. Think Tom Hanks/Josh Baskin in Big!

They are hoping that the idea of being able to play oversized piano keys with their feet as they skip up the steps will encourage them to turn their backs on the ease of the escalator and get some exercise on the stairs.

They have converted 54 steps in Wulin Plaza in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province into piano keys that will let pedestrians play a melody as they walk up or down. They can actually play many different notes, so the musically inclined will be able to make beautiful music. The rest of us will just make loud noises, especially if there is a big group of people attacking the stairs at the same time.

The Fun Theory’s piano initiative seems to work to as 66% more people chose to use the stairs after they had been given the musical treatment!
