Li’l Gotham is a new digital first series from artist and author Dustin Nguyen and co-writer Derek Fridolfs and it presents a totally different and rather lighthearted take on Batman’s home town and the criminal masterminds that inhabit it!
Each installment of the series will be released to tie into the major holidays in the U.S calendar, debuting the first one just in time for Halloween. Nguyen and Fridolfs say that aligning their installments with the major holidays enables them to play with the various different themes and frivolities associated with them!
As fans of Batman and the numerous different interpretations of his life and story are only too aware, these representations are often quite dark and depressing. Nguyen and Fridolfs are changing this tradition and lightning things up for the caped crime fighter and his numerous nemesis’s!
Nguyen said his inspiration for the project was born out of his passion for the Batman saga, he said: “The look and style is a slight departure from my usual (think the exact opposite of serious), but the idea has always been the same—to take our favorite existing Gotham characters, place them in fun scenarios without having to be tied to just one continuity or look and feel. It’s basically a Batman book for fans, by two huge fans.”
Fridolfs echoed Nguyen’s beliefs, he added:
“At times in various platforms, Batman has been extremely dark and taken very seriously…So respectfully, we’re going in the opposite direction and having a bit of whimsical fun with a whole city of characters beloved by fans and especially ourselves. Li’l size…big enjoyment.”
Editor Sarah Gaydos said:
“I love Dustin and Derek’s take on Gotham, and I cannot wait for the readers to see what we have in store for them over the coming months.”
With the first installment out on Halloween, fans can expect the next installments on Thanksgiving followed by Christmas and New Year editions!
Though initially this seems like a project that will appeal to the younger generation of Batman fans, older readers might find this lighthearted take on life in Gotham a nice change from the usual dark and ominous tone of Batman’s adventures.
