English teacher Katie met university student Kellan at the geek and popular culture convention Dragon*Con in Atlanta, Georgia and the couple soon fell in love because of their shared interest in all things geek, but especially because of their love of the show “Firefly.”
When they decided to marry, it was obviously going to be a wedding with a difference. According to Katie, the whole thing started when they decided that the groomsmen would wear Jayne hats and the bridesmaids would carry Kaylee parasols before the whole thing snowballed into other references to their favorite sci-fi stuff.

Katie’s father made the Hans Solo and Princess Leia wooden wedding cake toppers, the décor of the room was themed purple and green (the colors of many DC comic book villains) the tables were named after planets in the Firefly universe and light sabers and other sci-fi memorabilia are used in their wonderful wedding snaps.

The wedding program was even entitled “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Katie and Kellan’s Wedding,” which Katie said was used to explain many of the references and proceedings to their families who are far less geeky that they are! Nice touch.

Katie said that the hardest thing about organizing the wedding was trying to get the venue’s wedding planner to agree to all their unusual arrangements. Preferring the traditional kind of wedding, the planner apparently tried to fight them every step of the way, but Katie and Kellan were adamant that they were going to have it their way and thankfully defeated the evil, boring wedding planner to have their wonderful sci-fi wedding! Congratulations Katie and Kellan, wishing you a long geeky future together.
