According to Google’s official blog, the search engine behemoth’s self-driving cars have collectively covered more than 300,000 miles without a single accident or human casualty.
They claim to be “encouraged” by the progress made by these masterful vehicles and think that one day they can lead to safer roads in our future, however they were realistic about the self-driving cars, stating that there is still a “long road ahead” before they become commonplace on our roads!
The blog post said: “To provide the best experience we can, we’ll need to master snow-covered roadways, interpret temporary construction signals and handle other tricky situations that many drivers encounter.”
They have recently added the Lexus RX450h SUV to their fleet in a bid to help them master the more tricky terrains and conditions.
Google’s main aim with the introduction of these self-driving cars is to allow us to be more productive whilst we are in them, which dvice.com said; “Sounds like a sketchy way of saying “we want you to work in your car during your commute.”
Have to agree with them there, however I can definitely see some advantages…As someone who failed their driving test 4 times and has lost all hope of ever getting a license, I would love one of these badboys. I don’t know if I’d be using the journey to work to be more productive though, I’d blatantly be the ‘not a morning person’ trying to steal a few more zzzz’s on the backseat!
So far though, Nevada is the only state in the US to allow self-driving cars on certain roads, so it might be some time before these futuristic creations can transport us around!
Hurry up Google, I really want one of these!!
