Search engine giants and soon to be rulers of the entire world, Google, have just launched the new Google+ Events tool as part of the Google+ social network.
With Google+ Events you can design snazzy, super-cool invitations for your party, let guests know when the party has started, share your photos and videos online all together in the same place as the party happens with ‘Party Mode’, or arrange them all together afterwards in a slideshow and the event will automatically sync with Google Calendar.
I must admit that Google+ Events does look like the new age of an event application and ‘Party Mode’ which carries the tagline ‘Share the magic as it happens’ does look pretty cool. However, when I was watching Google’s promotional videos, I couldn’t help but think of a room full of people at a party who were too busy frantically tapping away at their smartphone touchscreens to do any actual partying!
The fact that everyone who has attended the event can post all their pictures and videos together in the same place is also a pretty awesome feature. However this could be a slightly dangerous tool for the kind of person who takes 376 pictures at a 2 hour event but is unable to tell that 372 of them are utter rubbish and posts them all up anyway. Before you know it, the gala event that you worked so hard to organize could be bogged down in elbows, disembodied heads, blurry thumbprint obscured unhappy snaps and some fascinating pictures of skirting boards and lampshades. If you are one of these serial-snappers, you will find yourself excluded from event invitations fairly sharpish I’d say!
Warning: With Google + Events there is a strong possibility that many people’s event invitations are going to be way better and more fun than their actual event. Bear this in mind and don’t be fooled!
