The dude in a goat costume who was dubbed the ‘Goat Man’ after being pictured in the Utah Mountains by photographer Coty Creighton, has contacted authorities and revealed himself to be a 57-year-old hunter from Southern California.
The ‘Goat Man’ whose name has not been revealed to the media, made contact with authorities after the story got a lot of attention and they appealed for him to come forward because they felt he might be in danger of being shot by hunters or attacked by the real goats.
Conservation outreach manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources, Phil Douglas, told the Standard-Examiner that the man had come forward and explained that the reason he was dressed in the goat suit was to test it out in preparation for an archery hunt of mountain goats in Canada next year. Douglass said: “He gave me details that convinced me it was him…I’m satisfied that this was a person preparing for a hunt and did it with knowledge and experience.”
Photographer Creighton, whose pictures started the whole ‘Goat Man’ frenzy was a little disappointed with the news, he said: “I thought I wanted answers, but I was naive. I should have left well enough alone. Now I just want the mystery back.” I’m inclined to agree with him, the story had much more zest when we thought there was a dude out there in the mountains who was trying to be accepted by a herd of mountain goats!
Douglass said that the man in question was very experienced and had hunted in many foreign countries, he explained that the goat-suit was not from Acme as I had previously imagined but was actually a hooded painter’s suit which had been covered in Polarfleece to give it the goaty coaty!
Another interesting fact that the ‘Goat Man’ shared with Douglass is that he is not alone, apparently this kind of carry-on is undertaken by other small groups of hunters too!
