I see a lot of epically weird and super random stuff writing for this website, not a lot surprises me anymore, but every now and then something exceptionally askew wings its way to me via the internet and leaves me scrunching up my face, unable to think much other than WTF!?!
When I first saw an article about the ‘Fist of the Gods’ game, which is gaining popularity in Japan, I had one of those moments. I guess you could describe it as a warped version of ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors’ that is hugely popular in Japan and often used to settle actual disagreements.
‘Fist of the Gods’ allegedly originated in Ancient Greece and was a way for two men to confirm their camaraderie. Hmmmm, certainly debatable, but then it is Ancient Greece we’re talking about, so anything’s possible!
To play ‘Fist of the Gods’ one should be dressed in traditional Ancient Greek attire, however one would imagine that you can probably still play it wearing your normal get-up.
You start the game by raising both hands up to the skies, as a gesture of worship to the Gods in the heavens. Then you wave your hands about as if they were blades and you were preparing for battle before sliding your hands across to make horizontal waves to mother earth.
Then come the stances for the three big daddy Gods of Ancient Greek lore, Zeus, Apollo and Hercules and as you perform each of these poses as demonstrated in the video, you make either a rock, paper or scissors gesture with your right fist.
This is when the game gets even more whack, the loser of the match must then prove his friendship to the victor by disrobing and flashing him his manhood. Here is where the Ancient Greek attire comes in handy, it would be much more difficult effortlessly slide off your skinny jeans!
I suppose nothing says BFF like flashing your dangly bits to your triumphant buddy…
You may well have established by now that this is not an actual game but rather an intriguing advertising ploy used by Otsuka Foods to promote their carbonated vitamin beverage MATCH!
It remains to be seen whether ‘Fist of the Gods’ will actually catch on and become commonplace in Japan, I suppose only time will tell. I’m not quite sure if I want it to or not!
