Gallus Strobel, who is the mayor of the German town of Triberg has introduced a controversial parking scheme in one of the town’s publicly owned car parks.

Strobel has introduced ‘women-only’ parking bays in this car park, that are marked with the female gender symbol and are allegedly ‘easier’ to park in! The women-only bays are considerably wider than the other bays and they are much better lit! 12 spots in the car park have been designated especially for women drivers.

The car park also has two spots that are marked only for men to park in. These two spots are especially narrow, have concrete pillars to negotiate and have to be reversed into! So basically Strobel has picked the two most difficult to park in bays in the whole car park and left them for the fellas!

Playing of course on the stereotype that women typically struggle to park their cars and that men seem to be naturally much better at it, Strobel’s scheme is likely to anger certain feminists!
However the town mayor sees the whole thing as a bit of a joke and something of a publicity stunt. He told ABC news “I have much pleasure with this idea…I decided last month to do this as a question of humor for our society, and as a question of justice.”

He said that so far, he has not received any complaints about the scheme from vexed feminists!! Triberg is a tourist town in Germany’s Black Forest region and Strobel is hoping that his new parking scheme will get the town a little bit of attention and bring in the visitors!!

Triberg is not the first town to introduce a scheme like this, authorities in the Chinese city of Tianjin has recently rolled out a number of women-only parking spots. Similar to the ones in Triberg, the bays are better lit and wider! The Tianjin women-only bays are marked with pink paint – ahhh ain’t that cute!
