Unless you are from Japan or are an avid fan of Japanese popular culture, then you will be forgiven for not noticing that the entire Somalian Olympic team appears to be dressed as popular figure Doraemon, the earless robotic cat from the future.
The similarity between the Somalian team’s attire for the ceremony and that of beloved time-travelling blue cat was immediately picked up by Japanese people who were watching the ceremony. The Twitter timeline in Japan was overtaken by Doraemon tweets with people quick to notice the uncanny resemblance!
It has been suggested that this was a deliberate move by the Somalian government as a bid to strengthen their relations with Japan, although we are fairly sure that the person who suggested this was joking. You never know though, stranger things have happened…
