Lawrence County Ohio Sheriff’s Office employees made a grisly find, when they were called to check on a man who had not been sighted for several weeks. In what sounds like it could be straight out of a Stephen King novel, upon entering the home in Elizabeth Township, officials found the body of the man and discovered that his corpse had been fed upon by some of the 50 dogs that he kept as pets.
The property was filled with trash and animal waste, it is not yet known whether the house was in this terrible state before the man, who is yet to be identified, passed away or if it was due to the behavior of the animals after their owner’s death.
Neighbors described the man, who is believed to be in his sixties, as a loner and say that they made several offers to help him with his many dogs, but he would just refuse and chase people from his land.
Animal welfare officials said that several of the dogs had died of starvation and that many others were so emaciated that they had to be put down to stop them suffering further distress.
Authorities also found a separate trailer which home to several cats, who were also suffering from malnutrition since the death of their owner.
Some of the dogs have been housed in the Lawrence Country Dog Shelter, while others remain on the property, yet to be rounded up.
