Hunan based Chinese construction company Broad Sustainable Building (BSB) have announced plans to build the world’s tallest building ‘Sky City’ and they think they can do it in just 90 days. BSB signed a deal with local authorities in the Wangcheng district in Changsha just a few days ago, but before the project begins the company will need approval from the central government.
Sky City – which would stand at a whopping 838 meters tall once complete, will be 10 meters taller than the world’s current tallest building – the Burj Khalifa – which took more than 5 years to complete!! It would also beat China’s current tallest skyscraper the Shanghai Tower by 206 meters in height – that’s an impressive way to take a record!
It might sound like an astronomically short period of time to build such a massive, high-tech structure but BSB are no strangers to speed-construction!! Over the last two years, BSB have constructed 30-story state of the art hotel in just a month, and a 15-story building in 6 days…Yup, that is less than a week! Totally insane as you can see from the video clip!
One of the ways BSB manage to get these buildings off the ground so quickly is by using prefabricated components – it is believed that more than 90% of Sky City will have been pieced together before the company even breaks ground on the building site!
This isn’t just some shabby structure being slapped together to get a height and speed record either, Sky City is promising to be one of the most modern buildings around. It will also be energy efficient, consuming just a fifth of the energy used by a normal building!
BSB’s structure will be cost effective too, according to reports from the Chinese newspaper 21 Century Business Herald, it is believed to cost just RMB 4 billion (US$628 million) which might sound like a lot, however not when you compare it to the $1.5 billion spend on the Burj Khalifa and the $2.2 billion that the Shanghai Tower cost!
