Aretha Franklin is the greatest

66-year-old soul singer, Aretha Franklin has been voted the greatest singer of all time by The Rolling Stone magazine.

The top 100 greatest singers of all time was compiled by a combination of artists, musicians, music journalists and “industry insiders” before being analysed and tabulated by Ernst & Young.

Mary J Blige paid tribute to the Queen of Soul, she said: “Aretha is a gift from God. When it comes to expressing yourself through song, there is no one who can touch her. She is the reason why women want to sing. Aretha has everything - the power, the technique. She is honest with everything she says. And she has total confidence; she does not waver at all.”

A sad day for music lovers

Viacom is bringing down the axe on 850 employees within MTV networks (MTV, VH1, CMT, BMT, Nickelodeon, etc).

An email was sent to all Viacom employees today from the CFOs read:

“Dear Colleagues:

With less than a month until the close of 2008, our entire organization continues to do everything possible to anticipate and adapt to the unprecedented changes affecting all our businesses. We know it hasn’t been easy and we couldn’t be more proud or more appreciative of how you have risen to the challenge.

Brits rule at Grammy 2009 nominations

It’s a good year for British music, with the Brits leading the way at the 2009 Grammy awards. Coldplay have got a magnificient seven nominations including, best rock album, best rock song, and pop and rock performance.

Newcomers Adele and Duffy also have a string of nominations each, Adele gaining four and Duffy three. Both will battle it out with The Jonas Brothers for Best New Act.

X Factor Leona Lewis is also nominated for three gongs including best vocal for her debut album Spirit.

Other nominees include Estelle, M.I.A, Paul McCartney, Hot Chip, Judas Priest and Robert Plant.

Take That’s new album is outselling Britney Spears’ by 14 copies to one.

And rightly so folowing Britney’s disastrous mimed performance on the X Factor..

The boyband’s new album “The Circus” is expected to shift 20,000 copies at Asda by the end of Monday, outselling Brit’s new album of the same title by 14 to one.
