The recent wedding of Laura Wong and Alex Cressman was unique not just because of the bagpipe players or the fact that the minister’s name was James Kirk. No, this couple had perhaps the most original, cool ring bearer ever: a Dragon Runner robot.
The epic little 10 pound robot is actually an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) typically used to remove bombs in battlefield situations. However, since the bride happens to be the mechanical engineer for Qinetiq who designed the Dragon Runner’s robotic arm, they were able to get one loaned to them for the wedding. So, now you can all officially hate every company that only sent a gift basket to you as a wedding present.
Although the Dragon Runner is capable of all sorts of cool tasks other than carrying a pair of rings down the aisle (like flying when tossed without its arm) it isn’t an autonomous robot, so it was controlled by one of the bride’s work friends during the ceremony and reception, who wore a special backpack with a control panel.
Mr. Roboto played as the ring bearing Dragon Runner made its way down the aisle, with the ring box held snugly in its claw, and during the reception it zipped onto the dance floor doing a “Saturday Night Fever spin and pump” as the wedding party was introduced.
Oh, and did we mention the robot even had a cute little tux? Yea. Beat that with your family’s cat with a pillow attached to its back!
