Teenagers often rant and rave about wanting to move out of the family home when they feel harshly done by or are fed up with their parents’ rules and regulations, however ranting and raving is all it usually amounts to. After awhile the effort of moving out, paying rent, having to cook your own dinner and do your own laundry outweighs the ‘injustice’ of living with ones parents and the idea is forgotten until the next row!
But things were slightly different for Austin Hay, another super-motivated teen like Kathryn DiMaria the girl building her own car, Hay has been working on building his own 130-square foot home in his parents’ back garden!
Hay, who is now 17, plans to live in his house after college so that he doesn’t have to pay a mortgage. His home is beautifully well-made and it has been registered as a trailer so he can drive it to college or anywhere else he fancies!

This is not some half-assed project thrown together because a moody teen wants somewhere to hide out and sulk; this is a proper mini home! It has electricity, a shower, a composting toilet and is full of awesomely cool space-saving storage maneuvers! The loft where Austin sleeps fits a standard double bed and the couch pulls out so he can have a guest stay over. He says he doesn’t have many parties in the home, but that could always change!
Check out the video which combines a tour of the home before it was complete and the finished product. What a superbly motivated teen!!
