Animal Control Officers Rescue A Dog That Is Nurturing A 4-Week Old Kitten

This is an awesomely cute story that the animal lovers amongst us will no doubt take great joy from, it’s about a dog that was found nursing a 4-week old kitten in South Carolina!

Anderson Animal Control officers were called out to reports of dog barking down a steep embankment, but when officer Michelle Smith went down there to investigate she found more than she bargained for.

The dog that had alerted people with its barking was a 5-year old, black-and-white Shih Tzu- mix, but she wasn’t alone. She was caring for a tiny kitten that Smith believes she may have rescued. The dog was even suckling the kitten, with Animal Control Officers believing that she experienced a surge of hormones that enabled her to produce milk to care for the tiny, defenseless kitten!
Let’s just take a moment to go D’aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw.

When she saw the odd couple, Smith said she wasn’t sure what to think, stating “I was shocked and surprised and then of course, awww.”

The dog and it’s kitten received the same reaction when Smith took them back to the shelter, with other officers completely astounded by the care the dog was showing to the kitten, nursing her, cleaning her and curling up to sleep next to her adoptive child!

Shelter director Jessica Cwynar said that though an unusual sight, such behavior is quite natural for mammals, she said; “It would be like one of us seeing a neglected or abandoned child and taking it under our wing.”

Neither the dog nor the kitten have a known name, so shelter volunteers are calling them “Girl” and have given them their own private cage together!

Cwynar said that though the dog is producing milk and suckling the kitten, it is not adequate nutrition for the little creature, so staff at the shelter are bottle feeding her too.

The dog has a striped collar and shelter staff say that she had clean fur and was well cared for, so they believe her owner is likely to be missing her. Cwynar said that there is already a long line of people who are ready to foster or adopt the unlikely duo, but they are hoping that the dog’s original owner will come forward and will be willing to take on the kitten too, because the pair seem to be inseparable.

Cwynar said that up until the discovery of this dog and her kitten she had only ever seen a dog nursing a cat on TV or at the zoo, though she added that the enmity between cats and dogs is often overblown and she has seen many instances of them getting along and living together.

Smith, who rescued the furry critters, said that seeing the pair reminded her of why she loves her job. She said, “Good things happen all the time, but great happens seldom… This is enough to keep me going the next six or eight months.”
